Barnett Hall is a 71,240 sq. ft., two-story dormitory located on the campus of Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. The project includes a complete renovation of the dormitory, a new roof, new doors and new windows to help increase the efficiency of the building. Structural upgrades needed to be made throughout the building while the renovation was in progress. The entire dormitory was vacated during construction. A new lounge addition and a 2nd elevator were included as part of this project. Within the building, a larger police station, laundry and campus life safety office were created. The HVAC system is a new geothermal well system with 54 wells. The sitework scope included working with VDOT to widen the road in front of the project along Woodrow Wilson Ave.
Nielsen worked closely with WWRC to implement the new systems which have new technology unfamiliar to the owner. For example, sendors where added to doors and windows to shut down the HVAC unit if left open. Sensors were also added to light fixtures and HVAC units which control the lighting and temperature based on the occupancy in the room.
This is a LEED Silver project
