The JMU University Recreation (UREC) building is one of only three of its kind in the United States. Built entirely for the recreational use of the university’s students, faculty, staff, and their families, the building and its surrounding grounds feature a junior Olympic pool, jacuzzi and sauna, eight racquetball/wallyball courts, an indoor running track, two gymnasiums (one dividable into four full-size basketball courts), a sand volleyball court, and a full-size synthetic turf field. The building’s space is further divided into various fitness areas including multi-level weight rooms, a cycling studio, an aerobics studio, locker rooms, a retail/pro shop, and equipment issue and repair shops.

THE NIELSEN PARTNERSHIP

Nielsen worked with the architect/engineer and the owner to value engineer the type and structure of the pool while maintaining the desired aesthetics. In addition, several mechanical and electrical adjustments resulted in significant cost savings for the owner.
