ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County is working on opening up a new school for the first time in 20 years.

Dozens gathered to help break ground for Mountain View Upper Elementary School.

This new school is being built just around the corner from Mountain View Elementary School. The upper school will help with overcrowding in the current school and house students between third and fifth grades.

Division leaders, community representatives, and even students got to help with the groundbreaking.

“We had students from third grade who are going to be our first fifth graders to walk through those doors, in addition to teachers and PTO representatives are all part of the design project of this, and we’re really here to say thank you,” said Mountain View Elementary Principal Seth Kennard. “Know that this is an investment from our community into our schools and our students, and it means a lot to all of us that we value public schools in Albemarle County.”

The project is slated to be finished in about a year and welcoming students by the fall of 2026.
